I love being able to wear yoga pants and sit on the couch with a good book and read all day. Sun beating down, time just passing by, no interruptions or things to do. Truth is, that’s more of a fantasy these days. But I’ve been making books more of a priority lately. Being able to download and use audio books has certainly helped but there’s something about a real book. I love so called ‘self help’ books. Call it what you like, but I enjoy getting to know myself better. I want to hear other perspectives because I’m curious and a work in progress. So whether it’s for you or for a gift idea here are few of my faves:
UPDATED: 2016 Faves
Daring Greatly by Brene Brown- Can you tell I’m a fan of her work? She was on my 2015 list too. If you want to understand why control and certainly and a ‘never enough mentality’ is stifling our greatest potential as well as how we parent, live, love and lead then this is the book for you. She talks about our shame story and how to move away from it and not pass it on so we can live more ‘wholeheartedly’. Ever wonder why two people can experience trauma and one takes a victim mentality and they other becomes a viking in their life? These aren’t just her thoughts. She a social worker with a doctorate and has tons of research to back it up. Her story telling is funny and her examples are relatable. Learn why our culture of seeing vulnerability as weakness is impacting our careers, lives and parenting. Curious? Then Daring Greatly is for you or someone you love.
The Universe Has Your Back! by Gabrielle Bernstein-Transform Fear to Faith. I have highlights all over this book and I’m re-reading it now. Do you want to create or gain a deeper spiritual connection to yourself and understand the power of The Universe? Are you ready to break-up with fear to live a more authentic life and unlock your hidden power? We all have a gift and Gabby’s tips and meditations will help you work through your fears. She explains why returning to love is really the key to unlimited happiness. If you’re ready, pick up this book!
The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz-I can easily credit this book with changing my life and outlook on things. It’s a big reason why I’m able to not take shit personally anymore. And that is hard to do. These four rules can change your life. It’s an easy read and how hard can it be to keep only four agreements? Easier said then done (I’m always reminding myself) but doing it is enlightening and life changing!(Fab gift for anyone just starting out on a self discovery journey!)
Rising Strong by Brene Brown–None of us get out of this life unscathed. None of us. We all have ‘stuff’ to overcome and will continue to as long as we are here doing this thing called life. I’ve always been fascinated with why some of us ‘rise above’ and others stay stuck. Whether you’ve been through it or you’re currently struggling with something, this is a great read on the methodology of how it’s done and how to be able to do it again and again. Brene’s humor, stories and research is insightful and inspiring!(Gift idea for someone currently struggling or someone who has overcome!)
The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy-The things you do everyday, the choices we make or don’t, add up to big things overtime. Sometimes they take you to where you want to be or help you achieve your dreams. Other times they can lead you to a disaster. The bottom line, you are in control of your life! You shape your own destiny and your life is a result of the choices you make. Whether you are starting out in your health journey, a new job or working on a dream it’s what you do everyday that will take you to where you want to be or lead you somewhere else. All of the things we do daily are ‘compounded’ and equal bigger things. I read this as I was starting out as a solopreneur and it’s was a wonderful reminder. (Good encouragment for anyone who is pursuing their dreams!)
Journey to the Heart by Melody Beattie–Want to add meditation to your life but don’t know where to start? Not sure if meditation is right for you? This book is perfect! It is a daily meditation that can be read in less then two minutes. Her message is real and thought provoking. I found this book in yoga class as the instructor would read a passage at the end of class. I adored it so much I bought it. I take five minutes before starting the day to read it and genuinely look forward to it. If you or someone you love is looking to work something into a daily routine this is the book. (I’ve given this book as a gift many times and it’s always loved!)
Happy reading! Read any of these? If you have or when you do, I’d love to hear what you think, drop me a line below.
